Uttarakhand hills awash with sunshine

0

Dateline Mussoorie: Snug as a bug in the rug! Perfectly describes the weather conditions in the hill state of Uttarakhand these days. Over the next few days, we will be seeing a two to three degree rise in the maximum temperature, even as the plains will continue to reel under dense fog and smog, bringing the minimum and maximum temperatures plummeting.

Director Met Department, Vikram Bakshi spoke to Newspost, “The fog will continue to cover the plains of Uttarakhand especially in the districts of Haridwar and UdhamSingh Nagar. The hills will continue to have clear, bright sunshine. Post the 17th of January, there is possibility of the fog lifting and improvement in the maximum and minimum temperatures in the plains too.”

As the plains continue to be shrouded in a thick blanket of fog and mercury dipping, the hills bask in sunshine under a blue sky. All around, it is hard to believe that this is the very depth of winter. From residents to tourists, everyone seems to be enjoying the bonanza of a toasty winter sun. Of course, there are some who are disappointed. They came looking for snow and ended up with sunshine. Shakti from Bangalore, who is visiting friends in Mussoorie says: “It is most disappointing. Last year around this time it has snowed and I travelled all this way hoping that there would be lots of snow.”

Last year, in January, the hill station witnessed its first heavy snowfall and was covered under a thick blanket of white, but this year it is awash with sunshine and there is no sight of snow or rain, anyway not just yet.

If it’s not snow, then it is the stunning winter-line along with the snow covered mountain-ranges that weave a magic all of their own. The hill-station never disappoints,” says Hotelier Prateek Karanwal as one witnesses a stream of vehicles making their way up the hill, come snow or sunshine!

Uttarakhand Tableau to be part of Republic Day Parade.

0

Dateline Dehradun: Good news! This Republic Day Parade at Rajpath, New Delhi will once again witness a tableau: Kedarkhand,  from the hill-state of Uttarakhand, one amongst seventeen states to make it to the grand parade.

Confirming the news, Director General, Information Dr. Mehrban Singh Bisht said, “Orders for this were issued by the Government of India on 5th January 2020.” After five-rounds of detailed meeting with the Ministry of Defense, the tableau of the hill state was given a ‘thumbs-up.’

This year, the theme of the tableau display is entitled ‘Kedarkhand‘. While the frontal part of the tableau will display the state animal ‘Kasturi Deer‘, the state bird ‘Monal‘ and the state flower ‘Brahmakamal‘, the magnificent Kedarnath temple complex complete with the nandi and pilgrims will form the background of this colourful tableau.

The tableau’s theme, design, model and music were hand-picked and successfully projected by Deputy Director, Information Department, KS Chauhan who explained, “the process for the selection of tableau design is a very complex one. Thirty two States including Union Territories participated in the selection arena, out of which seventeen states were finalized, with Uttarakhand being one of them.

Over the years, various tableaus from the hill-state have been a permanent fixture making their way down the Rajpath on the occasion of Republic day. ‘Phuldei’ in 2003, ‘Nandrajajat’ in 2005, ‘Valley of Flowers’ in 2006, ‘Corbett National Park’ in 2007, ‘Adventure Tourism’ in 2009, ‘Kumbh’ in 2010, ‘Herbs’ in the year 2014, ‘Kedarnath’ in 2015, ‘Rammana’ in the year 2016, ‘Rural Tourism’ in 2018 and ‘Annashakti Ashram (Kausani Migration and Anashakti)’ in 2019 gave a glimpse of the richness of Uttarakhand’s diverse heritage and culture to the world.

Last year, a lot was spoken and written about the missing Uttarakhand tableau from the 71st Republic Day Parade held in New Delhi, but all that is now a thing of the past as 2021 has definitely started off on a good note for Uttarakhand.

Pet Dog License mandatory in Dehradun

0

Dateline Dehradun: Next time you take your four-legged friend for a stroll in public places in the city, it would be a good idea to carry a ‘Valid pet dog license’ issued by Nagar Nigam, Dehradun.

Dr. Dinesh Chandra Tiwari, Senior Veterinary Officer, Nagar Nigam Dehradun tells us, “Under the Municipal bylaws there is provision to issue licenses for pet canines,” adding, “Over the months, we got complaints were pets had rabies like symptoms and on checking, to our surprise these pets had not been vaccinated for various ailments including serious disease such as rabies. Current vaccination against Rabies is pre-requisite to obtain the dog-license, and is part of the supporting documents needed to apply for a fresh license or its renewal. This is in interest of public and animal health both.”

Last year alone some five hundred and thirty six pet licenses were issued in Dehradun district. While the cost of the pet license, valid for twelve months, is priced at a nominal two hundred rupees, those with ‘no-license’ can be fined up to rupees five hundred.

Keeping pandemic restrictions in place, especially for senior citizens, the Veterinary Department has a 24×7 email facility in place for those who cannot physically be present to apply for the license. In the near future, Dr. Tiwari assures us, “we are planning to put up camps in various wards to make it easier for people to apply for licenses for their pet. But until such date, they will have to make do with whatever is available and we will send our teams to assist.

Revival of ‘Dog licensing’ serves as a great check and balance system that ensures that within their municipal limits, pet owners are doing their bit to keep the community and their own pets safe.

No new year’s day to celebrate: Uttarakhand

0

Dateline Mussoorie: 90% occupancy during the festive weekend in hotels across the hill station was reason enough for hoteliers and businessmen to look forward to the year-end on a festive note. But that too was cut short when the State Government sent out an SOP stating that there would be restrictions on Christmas and New Year parties in hotels, bars, and public places in view of the pandemic.

Opposed tooth and nail by hoteliers, businessmen and restaurant owners across the hill-state, politicians too joined the bandwagon. Talking on behalf of the hoteliers Congress leader Harish Rawat stated, “Hoteliers in the hill state look forward to certain occasions to welcome tourists during winters such as snowfall, Winterline, Carnivals, festive-seasons to sustain them through the harsh winter season. For starters, the pandemic has already broken the back of the industry. Add to these the kneejerk restrictions on Christmas and New Year. This will only do more harm than good.”

“If the government had to do something they should have come out with guidelines well in advance. When social gatherings, political gatherings, marriages are allowed then why have restrictions on New year’s and Christmas celebrations?” says Sandeep Sahni, President, Uttarakhand Hoteliers Association, adding, “The honorable Prime Minister had mentioned that we have to save both lives and livelihoods. In Uttarakhand, tourism is our livelihood and it will affect us all, adversely.”

Earlier in the day, ignoring all dissent, BJP Spokesperson Madan Kaushik made a statement clearing the stand of the government in the Assembly stating that ‘the restrictions would not affect tourism adversely, and would remain in place.’

With Mahakumbh slated from February next year, looms large on the horizon, perhaps its high time that the government comes up with clear-cut guidelines and SOPs for all tourism related activities. These last minutes ‘dos’ and ‘don’t’ will have far reaching repercussions that Uttarakhand can ill afford.
