Dateline Dehradun: The Alumni Meet-2024 was organized at Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), Jollygrant. Alumni from the colleges of Management, Engineering, Bioscience, and Yoga Science participated. During the event, the alumni shared their experiences related to college and career with the new students.

The event was inaugurated by the lighting of the lamp in front of the portrait of the founder Dr. Swami Rama. The Himalayan School of Science and Technology (HSST), Himalayan School of Management Studies (HSMS), Himalayan School of Biosciences (HSBS), and Himalayan School of Yoga Sciences (HSYS) alumni participated in the Alumni Meet-2024.
The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, addressed the attendees, highlighting that former students serve as guides for new students, making them aware of the challenges and opportunities in their careers. Dr. Dobhal noted that alumni are now serving in prestigious institutions across the country and are also involved in research.

The Registrar, Dr. Mukesh Bijlwan, mentioned that the Alumni Meet provides an opportunity for knowledge sharing and stressed the importance of staying connected with the university regardless of one’s current institution.

On this occasion, students engaged in cultural activities including solo songs and dances, which entertained all attendees. Dr. Atul Agarwal, President of the SRHU Alumni Association, announced that Hanisha from the College of Biosciences was chosen as Miss Sparkle, Anmol Tyagi from the School of Yoga Sciences was chosen as Mr. Alumni, and Srishti Thakuri as Miss Alumni. All the college principals including Dr. Pramod Kumar, Dr. Mohit Verma, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and Dr. Ajay Dubey along with faculty members were present at the event.

‘Halcyon’ Machine Installed at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant

The Cancer Research Institute (CRI) at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant has installed the Halcyon B Linear Accelerator Radiotherapy machine.

Dateline Dehradun: The Cancer Research Institute (CRI) at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant has installed the Halcyon B Linear Accelerator Radiotherapy machine. Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, President of Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), formally inaugurated the machine, dedicating it to public health.

With the continuous increase in cancer cases in India, the demand from patients has led to the commencement of operations using the advanced Halcyon B Linear Accelerator Radiotherapy machine at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant. This also makes Himalayan Hospital the first and only private teaching hospital in Uttarakhand to install such an advanced machine.

During the inauguration, Dr. Vijay Dhasmana stated, “although the statistics on cancer are alarming, the treatment of cancer is continuously evolving, and with technological advancements, we are now able to more effectively eliminate cancer cells with fewer side effects. This machine will prove to be a boon for patients.”

Dr. Sunil Saini, Director of the Cancer Research Institute Jollygrant, mentioned that the hospital’s Radiation Oncology Department has started using this machine to provide safe and effective radiotherapy to patients.

Dr. Vipul Nautiyal, Head of the Radiation Oncology Department, said, cancer patients in Uttarakhand no longer need to travel outside the state for treatment. The availability of an advanced machine like Halcyon at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant ensures that cancer treatment facilities are accessible locally.

During the event, directors and staff including Dr. Sunil Saini, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed, Medical Superintendent Dr. Rajesh Maheshwari, Dr. Hemchandra Joshi, Dr. Renu Dhasmana, Dr. Vipul Nautiyal, Dr. Vinay Kumar, and Dr. Mansi Barthwal were present.

How the ‘Halcyon’ Machine Works
Dr. Sunil Saini, Director of the Cancer Research Institute, explained that the state-of-the-art Halcyon machine produces high-energy particles or rays, which provide a focused beam to precise targets and destroys or damages cancer cells within the patient’s body. Each session on the machine lasts about 2-3 minutes, which allows most patients to avoid lengthy hospital stays.

Halcyon Machine to Prove a ‘Boon’ for Patients
– Patients from Uttarakhand and other states will benefit from the healthcare facilities.
– Treatment time will be reduced, decreasing the waiting list for patients.
– Patients can go home after therapy, reducing their expenses.
– The machine reduces the side effects of radiation.
– It works according to the treatment needs of the patient’s tumor, resulting in better outcomes and fewer side effects.

Selected Hospitals in the Country Have the Halcyon Machine
Dr. Vipul Nautiyal from the Radiation Oncology Department stated: only select hospitals in the country are currently treating cancer patients with the Halcyon machine. Until now, this facility was limited to major hospitals in metropolitan areas like Delhi and Chandigarh, but it is now available at the Himalayan Hospital’s Cancer Research Institute in Jollygrant.

Dateline Dehradun: An ‘oath’ ceremony was organized at Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) in Jolly Grant to strengthen democracy under voter awareness initiatives. Thousands of students and faculty members from all colleges of the university took an oath to vote.

At SRHU’s Himalayan School of Science and Technology, Himalayan School of Management Studies, Himalayan School of Pharmacy, Himalayan School of Yoga Sciences, Himalayan School of Biosciences, Himalayan College of Nursing, and Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, students, faculty, and staff of medical and paramedical disciplines took an oath to vote and inspire those around them to vote with a sense of responsibility.

Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, President of SRHU, emphasized the importance of everyone’s contribution to this festival of democracy and the necessity for every voter to use their vote to strengthen democracy.

Dr. Vineet Mehrotra, Director of Student Affairs, provided essential information on voting rights and the necessity of voting to all the students present. Additionally, voter awareness hoardings have been placed throughout the university.

Dateline Dehradun: The Himalayan College of Nursing, Jolly Grant, organized an awareness campaign at the CHC Doiwala on ‘National Safe Motherhood Day’. During this event, a quiz competition was held for women to provide them with health-related information.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU), Jolly Grant, hosted this awareness program.

During this time, Dr. KS Bhandari, the Chief Medical Superintendent at CHC Doiwala, mentioned that the objective of celebrating Safe Motherhood Day is to spread awareness about maternal health and care, provide high-quality health services to mothers, and promote safe childbirth.

Dr. Kamlesh Bharti from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department unveiled the program’s theme, “Together, Let’s Play Our Role for Respectful Motherhood Care.”

On this occasion, students from the Nursing College informed the visiting women about safe motherhood through plays and a poster exhibition. Upma George, Dr. Kanchan Bala, Lakshmi Kumar, Poonam Yadav also provided information to the women present.

Meanwhile, in Thano village, the Community Health Department of Himalayan College of Nursing conducted an awareness campaign on the occasion of World Health Day. MSC students informed people about a healthy lifestyle through plays and house-to-house visits. Additionally, a poster exhibition was organized in the college auditorium, displaying topics like healthy lifestyles, the importance of cleanliness, etc. Present on the occasion were Principal Dr. Sanchita Pugazandi, Dr. Kamli Prakash, Atul Kumar, Shobha Masih, Chandan Kumar, John Davidson apart from many others.

MoU between Swami Rama Himalayan University & PhD Chamber of Commerce & Industry

MoU signed between Swami Rama Himalayan University Jolly Grant and PhD Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PHDCCI) for industry training and career growth.

DOIWALA- Students of Swami Rama Himalayan University Jolly Grant will receive support from the PhD Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PHDCCI) for industry training and career growth. A special MoU was signed between the two institutions.

Under the guidance of Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, President of Swami Rama Himalayan University (SRHU) Jolly Grant, and in the presence of Vice Chancellor Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, Registrar Dr. Mukesh Bijlwan, and PHDCCI Executive Director Dr. Ranjit Mehta the MoU was formally inked.

On this occasion, Vice Chancellor Dr. Rajendra Dobhal stated, “the MoU will allow university students to benefit from the expertise and resources of the PhD Chamber, offering seminars, workshops, and industrial training to bridge the gap between academia and industry.”

PHDCCI Executive Director Dr. Ranjit Mehta noted that, “PHDCCI is conducting an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) awareness tour across the country, and similar programs will be organized at SRHU under this MoU.”

SRHU’s Director of Academic Development, Dr. Vijendra Chauhan, mentioned that, “the agreement will also enable industry leaders to benefit from the expertise of university faculty members. Registrar Dr. Mukesh Bijlwan added that, “this will inspire new vigor in the university’s teaching and research efforts.”

The event was coordinated by Dr. Apoorv Trivedi. Dr. Bindu De, Dr. Sanchita, Dr. Mohit Verma, Dr. Pramod Kumar, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Dr. Ajay Dubey, Dr. Ganesh, and PHDCCI officials Dr. Jatinder Singh, Rajiv Ghai, Hemant Kochhar, and Vishal Kala were present.

How will the MoU benefit students
Dr. Apoorv Trivedi explained: the PhD Chamber, established in 1905, is the largest industry consortium in India. It connects millions of small and large enterprises. Through this agreement, university teachers and students will receive advanced training from various industrial units associated with the PhD Chamber.

The Tara Foundation founded in 2015, Dehradun  is  a registered Public Charitable Trust.  “The Trust was formed with a vision for  world of peace, harmony and well-being. It aims to propagate compassion, loving-kindness, and wisdom that enables people of all ages, cultures, and traditions to lead a happy and meaningful life and to be of service to all sentient beings,” expresses Ms Tsering Chozom Luding, Chairperson of Tara Foundation.

And working on those principles, the Foundation recently came forward to seek help  for a childless elderly couple, who worked as daily labourer and house-help but given their age and falling health were now confined to their rental room and finding it difficult to make ends meet. Then, there was Neeraj, a cobbler in Rajpur who had spent his meagre savings on his daughter’s treatment whom he lost last November. With a constant threat from loan sharks, he made an appeal for help via Tara Foundation who helped him to raise funds and pay off some portion of his pending loan.

And these are just some of the people whom the Foundation has reached out to. “We get calls or messages from people seeking help either for themselves or those they know. I personally go and investigate the case and only then, the team sets into action. We see how we can help, from ration, tools, rental or even cash at times is distributed as a source of relief to those who seek,” Chozom adds.

Since its inception in 2015, the Trust has helped better umpteen lives and focussed their work in core areas: Education /Health and Social Welfare/Environment/Animal well-being /Economic empowerment.

From making upcycled school bags from discarded robes by monks and nuns to clean up drives in Dehradun. Personally tending to abandoned animals. Repairing boundary wall and gates of a primary school to beautification of drinking water facility, scholarship for students, nature walks are just a few of the activities that the Foundation is regularly credited for.

Tara Foundation runs a free tuition centre in Kathbangla slum

Well-known for her unique social work Tsering Chozom Luding, even sold her jewellery to fund the Foundation. Today, recognition has come in many forms. She has been conferred with “Certificate of appreciation” from Citizens of Green Doon in 2010, ‘Citizen Exemplary Award’ at the Rajpur Nature Festival in 2019. In 2023 she was honoured with the award of ‘Social Impactor’ under Uttarakhand Educator’s Award. On International women’s day this year, she also received ‘Certificate of Appreciation from Inner wheel club, Dehradun. But she feels, “the biggest recognition that I have ever received is being able to help, assist and touch lives in whatever way I can.”

Team Shekinah Mukhiya’s harmonious fundraiser

Dateline Dehradun:  In a world often overshadowed by tales of hardship and struggle, a guiding light of hope emerged when Shekinah Mukhiya and her father Vikas Mukhiya organized an online fundraiser for a terminally ill patient Bikash Tamang battling rectal cancer at Tata Memorial Hospital in Kolkata.

When Bikash Tamang’s wife, Bhawana Thapa, reached out to Shekinah a few days back seeking assistance in raising 5 lakh rupees for Bikash’s urgent surgery, having exhausted all financial avenues, little did she know that a miracle was waiting to happen.  Without hesitation, the father-daughter duo accepted the cause. They used their social media reach to illuminate Bikash’s plight and the fundraiser resonated with hearts worldwide.

Helping lives

Through captivating Facebook and Instagram Live sessions, enhanced with soul-stirring melodies and heart-touching narratives, they embarked on a campaign to raise money for the Tamang family. The constant support of Reza Abdulla Khan  and Sanjeev Newpaney, Sikkim helped the duo to reach their goal within a short span.

Their heartfelt performances went beyond borders, captivating the attention of compassionate souls from around the globe. In a remarkable display of solidarity, individuals came forward, offering their contributions through online channels. Within just four days of relentless dedication and hard work,  each chord that the duo strummed and sang hit home the noble cause.  The Mukhiya’s succeeded in gathering 2 lakh rupees, evidence of the unstoppable spirit of humanity, kindness and generosity.

Yet this journey has a long way to go.  As Bikash Tamang’s battle against cancer endures, and his need for financial support remains, they maintain hope that there will be help from all quarters.

Even in the past this father-daughter duo have extended a helping hand to strangers in need, they have symbolized the essence of love, compassion, and selflessness. Theirs is a story that rises above the boundaries of mere kindness, echoing the resounding truth that ‘kindness knows no bounds.’

Dateline Dehradun: A one-day national workshop on ‘Exploring AI using IBM Watson was organized by HSST at Swami Rama Himalayan University, Jolly Grant. The objective of this workshop was to empower students with hands-on experience and ethical insights to unleash the transformative potential of AI using IBM Watson.

Vice Chancellor, Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, has always emphasised the importance of continuous learning and exploration, particularly in leveraging the transformative power of technology for the betterment of communities. This workshop was a testament to that vision. Dr. Vijendra D. Chauhan, Director General (Academic Development) SRHU, Dr. Pramod Kumar, Principal of HSST, along with senior professors, faculty members, and students from all programs were in attendance.

The event commenced with the traditional lamp lighting ceremony and a warm welcome extended to the distinguished guests by Dr. Anupama Mishra, Faculty at HSST.

While addressing the young intellects, Dr Vijendra D Chauhan discussed the profound impact of artificial intelligence in our rapidly evolving digital era. He highlighted various avenues through which students could contribute, such as developing AI-powered diagnostic tools, designing smart healthcare systems, and leveraging data analytics to improve patient outcomes. He urged the students to embrace a multidisciplinary approach to education and research, envisioning a future where technology serves as a force for good, advancing healthcare, and creating a more equitable and sustainable world for all.

Dr. Pramod Kumar, Principal of Himalayan School of Science and Technology, steered the transformative workshop, as both a visionary educator and an astute organizer. “Innovation knows no bounds,” Dr. Pramod Kumar asserted, igniting the sparks of curiosity within each eager mind. He reminded that our capacity to innovate is limited only by our imagination. Through embracing new technologies, we not only equip ourselves with tools but also with the mindset to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of tomorrow.

Dr. Mayank Aggarwal, Head of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Gurukul Kangri, was the keynote speaker. Throughout the three-hour workshop, Dr. Aggarwal provided invaluable insights into the significant contributions and comprehensive understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) through the lens of IBM’s Watson technology. In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, AI stands as a cornerstone of innovation and progress.

Equipping students with practical knowledge and skills in this domain is essential for their future success in academia and industry it was opined by experts. On behalf of the organizing committee and as an astute organizer of this workshop, the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Pramod Kumar, Principal HSST.

The organising members were Dr Pooja Baloni and Dr Anupama Mishra. Amongst those present were B Tech, BCA, MCA, B.Sc Hons and Data Science students.

Dateline Dehradun: On the occasion of Autism and World Health Day, Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant and Rural Development Institute (RDI) launched an awareness campaign. A painting competition for children suffering from Autism was organized at the hospital. Meanwhile, more than 60 ASHA and Anganwadi workers were informed about the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of Autism by the doctors of the hospital in Bahadarabad Haridwar.

Addressing the awareness program on the occasion of Autism Day, Dr. Hem Chandra Joshi, Director of Health Services at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant, stated that this year’s theme for Autism awareness is “Empowering Autistic Individuals”, aiming to provide more support and empowerment to children with this condition.

The Head of Pediatrics Department, Dr. Anil Rawat mentioned that such children start speaking late, repeat words, etc., thus it is essential to integrate autistic individuals into social activities. Senior Pediatrician Dr. Alpa Gupta answered questions related to Autism interacting with the parents. Dr. Nirul Pandita organized a painting competition for children suffering from Autism. All children were awarded. The program was made successful with the support of Dr. Jyoti Walia, Dr. Ashish Simlty, Dr. Sanobar Wasim, Dr. Nitika Agarwal, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Sonam Agarwal, Dr. Manju Kedarnath, and others.

RDI provided relevant information to more than 60 ASHA and Anganwadi workers. Neelam Pandey, Program Officer at Rural Development Institute, mentioned that an awareness campaign on Autism was launched by Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant and Rural Development Institute (RDI). In this series, more than 60 ASHA and Anganwadi workers were informed about the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of Autism by the hospital’s doctors in Bahadarabad Haridwar.

Dr. Subodh Joshi, Health Superintendent of Bahadarabad, appreciated the awareness program. Dr. Anil Rawat, Dr. Nirul, Dr. Rakesh, Dr. Chandni, Ravindra Verma, Leela Uniyal, Seema, and Sheetal were present during this activity.

What is Autism?
Dr. Anil Rawat, Head of the Pediatrics Department at Himalayan Hospital Jollygrant, explained that awareness about Autism is extremely necessary. It is a neurological condition that begins in childhood, adversely affecting a child’s communication, imagination, and social interaction. In simple terms, children suffering from Autism have lesser brain development compared to other children. Pediatric specialist Dr. Rakesh Kumar at Himalayan Hospital mentioned that the absence of speech development, abnormal sensitivity, unusual hand or body movements, inability to play, lack of eye contact, not reacting to their name, inability to connect with others, and playing with toys in a peculiar way are some major symptoms indicating Autism. These should not be ignored at any cost.

Autism becoming a major health problem: Autism is becoming a significant challenge worldwide. The number of children suffering from Autism in India is continuously increasing. According to a study published in 2021, the estimated number of Autistic children in India could be about 1 in 68 children.

Dateline Dehradun: In the extempore competition held at Swami Rama Himalayan University, Mansi secured the first position. Students showcased their excellent public speaking skills in the competition. The competition, held in the auditorium of the Engineering College on Thursday, saw great enthusiasm amongst the students. During the competition, the participating students presented their points effectively on the given topics. In the competition, Mansi Gururani from the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences secured the first place, Mansi Bajaj secured the second place, and Karuna Dean from the Himalayan College of Nursing secured the third place.

The winners were honored and awarded by the Vice Chancellor of Swami Rama Himalayan University, Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, who also encouraged them to participate in such competitions in the future. He stated that in today’s competitive era, it is essential for students to inculcate skills like public speaking along with their studies. He also mentioned that organizing competitions like extempore not only develops the confidence of students but also enhances their knowledge on various topics.

Dr. Seema Madhok and Saurabh Verma from CPACE informed that students from the university’s colleges of Medical, Nursing, Engineering, Yoga Science, Bioscience, Management, and Pharmacy, totaling to 70, participated in the competition. The faculty of all colleges contributed to the successful conduct of the program.
