Water scarcity stares the fire brigade department in the face of fire

0

Mussoorie, a raging fire at a house close to the Central School for Tibetans, in Happy Valley area of Mussoorie last afternoon has highlighted the problem of water paucity in the hill-station.

Once a home to four families, the house was completely gutted within hours. Fortunately there was no loss to life as the inhabitants of the house were out for their daily work.

Rakesh Tyagi, leading fireman at the site stated, “Prima facie it looks like a short circuit that caused the fire. For the past eight days we have had no water available for which we made several complaints to the Water Department. We managed three water tankers, but we got ready assistance from Lal Bahadur Shastri National Administration of Academy  who assisted us by giving eight water tankers to douse the fire, which took us close to three hours.

Mussoorie’s Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan, Assistant Engineer, S.Rawat  maintains that there have been no shortage of water supply to Mussoorie’s lone fire station. “They have a direct water connection and get water twice a day, possibly their reservoir was depleted which caused this shortage.

That said, the fact remains that while the existing water supply to the hill-station is  7.67 MLD, tourist season demand peaks to 14.5 MLD which is provided by the already-depleting twenty odd springs and brooklets in and around Mussoorie.

Ban on use of plastic and thermacol articles during chardham yatra

0

During the upcoming Chardham yatra, the State government will work to ensure the ban on the use of plastic and thermacol articles.

Garhwal Commissioner and Uttarakhand Tourism Secretary Dilip Jawalkar said, “the onus will be on the district administration to ensure the ban on plastic in the state is fully enforced. There has been a plastic ban in place  but it has come to light that the pilgrims continue to use such articles. Maybe, they are not aware of the ban. We will ensure that  notices are put in place that are frequented by the pilgrims and tourists.

Jawalkar said that the district administration would have to ensure that their districts too followed the guidelines and there was no violation. To undertake the Chardham yatra pilgrims cover Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi and Dehradun. Besides the ban on plastic, the Uttarakhand government has also launched an anti-encroachment drive in places of pilgrimage so that the roads become spacious and there were no jams. “Anti-encroachment drive is on in Yamnotri and we hope that shopkeepers will voluntarily take up the exercise,” Jawalkar added.

Angaar: Youngsters to return to Mussoorie its past glory

0

THE OLD ORDER CHANGES YIELDING PLACE TO NEW..And that is exactly what is happening in the hill-station of Mussoorie. After years of witnessing their hometown going to the dogs quite literally, a group of likeminded youngsters have joined hands and mind to be the change they want to see in Mussoorie.

A growing group of 700 members within a few months of being created by admin Sudhanshu Rawat, a resident of Mussoorie, ANGAAR has since then become a think-tank and do-tank. These young, energetic and determined lot have taken things into their own hands and are doing what many would either ignore, politicians would encash and many would rather look the other way.

In his late twenties, Sudhanshu speaks for all when he says, “For years and now generations we have been hearing about the grand-old days of Mussoorie and how its gone from bad to worse. This is a group which has decided to dedicate their talent, the social media and our determination in making sure that we will ourselves will do our bit in making their hometown return to its glorious past.”

ANGAAR as the group is titled, clearly screams ‘NO POLITICS JUST WORK’ is not to be taken lightly. This group of passionate members is growing in number and strength with each passing day. There are no leaders here. Everyone works with the single-minded goal of making their hometown a better, safer, brighter and cleaner place.

With lots of ideas and plans discussed to and fro, the group has made its presence felt with Traffic Awareness Rally, Cleanliness Drive, Beautification Drive done along with Stambh, and are promising new changes in the future as well.

‘How long will we blame our politicians and their politics and be mute witness to the degradation of our hill-town?’ is the liet-motif on which the group works upon and  perhaps its time this ANGAAR or flame spreads like a forest-fire and becomes the change we all want to see.

Highways, the new runways for Airpower

0

When the military strategists explained the term National Air Power as the sum total of all the flying assets of a nation, they perhaps overlooked the use of highways as runways for military use brought together in aid of defence of the country.

The use of highways as airstrips for take off and landing of military or civil aircraft, has been in practice since the First World War and right upto now.

Sweden showed the world how their state-of-the-art roads, surrounded by thick foliage could be used to land planes, and there after a number of countries have adopted this technique including Singapore and Pakistan.

So when the IAF demonstrated this by landing a Fighter and a Transport Aircraft on Lucknow-Agra highway on Oct 24 2017 it brought a strategically important aspect to the forefront. Fighter aircrafts like SU-30 s and Mirages, along with Transport aircraft like the C130s highlighted the fact that in absence of real runways, our highways too could be  used for safe take off and landings.

India has a vast border over land and sea running close to 10,000 Kms with security threat from all sides. There is a distinct possibility of Pakistan and China opening a combined front. This vast military requirement will call for round the clock air force to provide a strike air-craft to destroy important targets in the enemy zone and tactical battle area.

However the most important point out here is that our own airfields would be under constant military attack which would lead to a certain amount of damage to these assets and hence making these unavailable for our fighter jets to use.

Operating combat aircraft from highways would also require maintenance teams, refuelling and rearming teams, fuel dumps and ammo dumps if required. The present government has earmarked a large number of Highways all around the country, like in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and plenty more to be kept ready by State governments if and when required.

Today, there are close to 36 abandoned air fields like in Salua , Dudh kundi , Chakulia , Dalbhum garh, Amardard Panagarh, Chai basa etc, between Kolkatta to Kharagpur right upto Jamshedpur which could possibly put to good use if need arises.

The most outstanding aspect of this exercise is not only cooperation between the three services using common resources, but also a complete civil-military cooperation keeping in view the safety and security of the nation, which is the need of the hour.

Mukteshwar, A dream dreamt by siblings as kids, becomes a beautiful reality. A retinue of 20 plus local employees assists in running the resort. Along with this, the siblings have given girls from nearby communities the perfect platform to showcase their skills of local cuisine or art by inviting them DYO, if interested.

Why not Mussoorie this weekend, some may ask?

0

(Mussoorie/Dehradun): Soaring temperatures, rising mercury, dirt and dust and a four-day long weekend is all that is takes to have Mussoorie undone at the seams. From crack of dawn, the residents of this sleepy town awaken to the constant throb of cars and motorcycle horns, hooters and the all-pervading smell of cordite. Clutch plates burn, brakes squeburn vehicles try to maneuver their way through the narrow lanes. To take things from bad to worse, from order to chaos are the wrongly parked vehicles, abandoned by tourists and locals alike on the roadsides.

This slowly moving glacier of vehicles makes Mussoorie an unpopular destination, at least for repeat tourists anyway. Families from Delhi, Gurgaon, Haryana and Punjab line up in a never-ending queue as they inch their way to the two ends of the Mall to find that it is closed to traffic from morning to 5.30 p.m. Those with accommodation in hotels along the Mall must pay a fee one more time. Scalping or overcharging at the few parking lots is a given constant.

As if that were not enough, driving to getaways like Kempty Fall or Dhanolti is strictly for the bold, the brave or the loony. There are no signboards to assist you as the local constabulary is stretched to the limits.DG traffic Dehradun Kewal Khurana said, ” 2 inspectors, 15 constables will be stationed in Mussoorie until Monday and two CPU patrol units will be permanently stationed in Mussoorie this season.”

What do the locals do? They hunker down. Avoid the madding rush. It’s safer to be tucked away at home. They hope all the while that this nightmare will come to an end sooner than later. What about the tourists? You may wonder. They grind their teeth, vowing never to come back here again as they say to themselves: ‘Stay at home. Avoid the rush!’
