Just a week back, the DM took a review meeting regarding Solid Waste Management in the District and came up with some unique methods to battle garbage.

The DM instructed the Municipality and Nagar Panchayat of the district to segregate biodegradable and plastic waste for easy disposal. Shruti Samaj Vikas Sanstha, which has been collecting waste from eight wards has been instructed to put up garbage bins for segregated waste. RK Mishra of the Srishti Samaj Vikas Sansthan apprised that a waste disposal machine lay defunct in Rantoli which the DM ordered to be fixed with immediate urgency.

Executive Officer of Nagar Panchayats in Agasthyamuni, Ukhimath, Tilwada were instructed to keep cleanliness in their wards and to take action against those who littered in the open.

Fourteen places were identified in town to install CCTV cameras so that those who littered  could be fined, immediately. Four cameras are to be installed at Punand Gadhar, another four in Vohra Drain and two each at Upper Bazaar; Bailley Bridge and at the confluence of Mandakini and Alaknanda river keeping  a close watch on those who dare to litter.

Efforts like these will definitely ensure, that in the long run, Devbhoomi goes green!

In UK, this police-station doubles up as a school

1

Just eight kilometers from the Uttarakhand Police Headquarters in Dehradun, Premnagar Police Station has been doubling up as a day-care for under-privileged children.

Under the guidance of SI Mukesh Tyagi and Aasraa NGO, a successful day-care school has been running in the forecourt of the police station for months. Teachers here introduce children from 4-12 year olds to the world of literacy in two shifts which begin at 9:30 a.m. and wrap up around 3:30.

SI Mukesh tells us, “few months ago this NGO approached us asking for help regarding a place to teach the children, I suggested them to put up a temporary shed and started this day-care within the safety of the police station. We initially started with ten students in the month of March but now have close to fifty students.

Seeing the initiative of the local police, many people volunteered to help. Now, these children not only get free education but their stationary, uniform, a pick up and drop facility and other expenses are taken care off by like-minded people who come from time to time to aid and assist in any which way possible.

This first-of-its-kind school opened within the premises of the police station, is also being seen as an initiative by the police to keep away children who belong to the Nanda-ki-chowki slum, along the Tons river, from anti-social activities.

Today, Mukesh Tyagi and his teams responsibility double up as they beautifully balance the world of crime and the written word giving these young minds an equal opportunity to a better and brighter future.

Uttarakhand’s ‘Hursil Apple’ to be a brand soon

0

The apple seed of Garhwal is the gift by a man called Fredrick E. Wilson  aka Pahadi Wilson who introduced apples to the Bhagirathi Valley. The Stokes of Kotgadh and Banons of Kullu were pioneers in the cultivation of apple orchards in the Himalaya.

Did Wilson foresee that two hundred years down the line, he would one day be remembered for bringing prosperity to the region thanks to apple produce, putting not just Hursil, but the entire district of Uttarakashi on the map of horticulture produce and tourism.

Today, eight varieties of apples including Wilson Apple, Royal Delicious, Red Delicious  grow in abundance in the region, seeking their own personalised brand as ‘Hursil Apple.’

Director of Indo-Dutch Horticulture Technologies Sudhir Chadha who has been surveying and assisting apple growers in the region tells us, “we did an extensive survey and study in Uttarakhand and came to the conclusion that the District of Uttarakashi alone can substitute for apple import. Aarakot hills, Sankri Natwar region including Hursil have ample potential, while low-lying areas of the district have been successful in experiments with new apple stock brought in from Netherlands, France and Italy.

Making the most of what the district has to offer, the District Magistrate of Uttarkashi Ashish Kumar tells us, “On the 28th of September,  a day event will be held in Hursil. It will be first-of-its-kind fair which will bring apple buyers and sellers on an interactive platform and also serve the dual purpose of connecting Hursil in Uttarkashi to other destinations on the tourism map as well.”

Visitor, locals and tourists alike shall be invitees to partake the Apple harvest from the orchards abutting Hursil. The local economy swivels around the apple crop. Perhaps the branding of this produce will help bring Wilson’s apples on par with apples that go by the name of Himanchal Apple.

High Court orders change in timing of Naini-Doon Janshatabdi

0

Nainital, The High Court ordered the Railways to change the time-table of the Naini-Doon Janshatabdi, the train which was recently flagged off and runs between Kathgodam in Kumaon and Dehradun. The Court passed orders that the train timing to depart from Kathgodam to Dehradun be changed to 5pm and from Dehradun to Kathgodam at 5 a.m. in the morning. Along with this the Court ordered the train to ply on Sunday as well.

Taking cognisance of a PIL filed by Advocate Pankaj Miglani who brought forth the issue also highlighted the fact that the condition of Dehradun and Kathgodam railway stations was pathetic, with filthy platforms and railway coaches, without proper arrangement for food and sleeping for passengers.

The Petitioner further stated that the train was the best means of commuting between Nainital High Court and Dehradun, yet it was in a pathetic condition. The new train was being seen as a convenient means of transport for those who came to the High Court for legal work, but as the timing of the train was not conducive many couldnt make the most of it.

Hearing the petition, the Bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Rajeev Sharma and Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari ordered the Railway to change the timing of the Naini-Doon Janshatabdi and also to ply on Sundays. It further ordered that platforms at both stations to be properly maintained, passengers onboard to be served good food, coaches to be cleaned daily. In this case, the Railways were also asked to make a reply.

Mussoorie: Monsoon children in full-bloom

0

In the hills, they will tell you that when the cobra lilies turn fiery red; the tree ferns begin to turn brown; the setting sun changes its multi-hued pallet of colours with each passing day and the garden escapees bloom – you can take it for granted that the Great Indian Monsoon is on the retreat after its three month reign in these mountains.

Come end-August and a carpet of wild flowers have sprung into existence. Mauve, red, pink and white orchids bloom on every nook and corner of the hill-station of Mussoorie. But what takes your breath away are the vibrant garden-escapees, the glory of the place. I do not think there can be a finer wild flower than the wild ginger lily, the dahlia and the cobra lily. The sheer variety of its colours abloom in dense masses, grow in the wild from end of July to October, splashes of colour on the jade green hillside.

The slopes above and below the road is awash in a nodding sea of flowers dancing in the gentle breeze, watching you through the water-laden mist which comes down to touch the plants, as the colours jump out at you: crimson, scarlet, mauve, white, yellow, pink, orange, purple and sometimes a deep, almost black maroon. The wild-flowers play, ‘now-you-see-me, now-you-don’t,’ just as mist envelopes them briefly in between sunshine and rain.

Such a gathering of wildflowers warms the cockles of the heart and pleases to the eyes just at a time of the year when everything else is shrouded in a gloomy mist of grey, slowly making its way in Autumn.

Come to the hills now and let the short-lived magic spell of monsoon’s  rainbow children in bloom, balm your heart and soul before they too vanish with the retreating rains making way for winter’s icy march.

An artist’s unique gift to BATTI GUL METER CHALU.

0

An artist and his art know no boundaries. Once again we take the opportunity to re-introduce you to ‘Deependra Negi’ fondly called Deep Negi. A resident of Tehri Garhwal, Deep has for years been working in the Healthcare Department in Dubai, but with his roots deeply embedded in the hills of Garhwal, the young lad has never given up on any opportunity to do something for hill state.

Relentlessly promoting the art and culture of his home-state Uttarakhand in the field of education, music and other social fields has been Deep Negi’s forte.

Today we uncover Deep’s latest gift to his native land and how it is directly linked to Bollywood’s much-awaited movie starring Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor’s entitled BATTI GUL METER CHALU.

The movie has been shot extensively in the beautiful locales of the hill state, with the lead actors playing Uttarakhandi characters in the movie using local phrases and leitmotifs as well.

Grabbing the occasion, Deep composed a befitting song for the film, sitting in Dubai. Unfortunately with limited information resources, the lyricist was unable to showcase his work to the Director of BATTI GUL METER CHALU, Shree Narayan Singh.

Not one to be easily dejected, Deep went onto then record and lend his voice to his composition that has been launched on his YouTube channel for all to hear and share.

A little over five minutes, the foot-tapping song composed by Reethesh Roy, manages to beautifully capture the beauty of the hill-state with lyrics containing the title of the film, few regional terms and phrases which give it a local tinge.

Strong willed and talented Deep has managed to bridge all distances to promote his culture, language and hill-state. Let us now do our bit to support Deep’s selfless effort and make the song reach the right ears.

FTII’s 3-week Foundation Course in Nainital nears completion

0

In the final week of FTII’s on going 3-week Foundation Course in Screen Acting in Nainital, Uttarakhand students rehearsed monologues and scenes.

Participants from nine States of India such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi have enrolled for the Course along with one participant from Japan.

Siddharth Shasta, Course Director also takes their voice and speech exercises. These exercises are important as they stretch the vocal chords and increase blood flow to the larynx and other body parts including lungs, lips and tongue. This reduces vocal fatigue and hoarseness when using voice over long periods. It also lets an actor reach a wider range of pitch, which is important for elevating the speech.

The Course is being held in association with Nainital-based Himalayan Society for Art, Culture, Education, Environment and Film Development (HIMACEEF), promoted by film makers and academicians Rajesh Shah (Cinematography,1992,FTII) and National Award winning film maker Shalini Shah.

FTII alumnus Siddharth Shasta (Acting, 2006) is an Associate Professor of Acting at FTII and belongs to the new generation of acting teachers.

Dehradun GPO all set for Rakshabandhan

The General Post Office in Dehradun is no stranger to long, unending queues. Students filling in forms, speed post, money order queues or just your regular postal work are endless for those who visit the GPO at any point of time.

So what comes as a pleasant surprise then! With Rakshabandhan around the corner,  special counters dedicated to ladies here specifically to post rakhis with songs dedicated to siblings playing at the General Post office turns it into a unique experience.

For the past twenty days, half a dozen red and black post boxes dot the exterior of GPO building. Dedicated to particular cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkotta, Chennai and others, have been put up for posting only rakhis. Once your rakhi is sealed and stamped you could walk up directly to the postbox and mail it to the city of delivery. We meet one Sarita Pawar who is here to post her rakhi to her brother working in Chennai, she tells us, “The boxes set up outside have made it simpler to post our rakhis to certain metro cities, we dont have to bother about queues for a change.

Keeping in mind the rush around Rakshabandhan more dedicated counters have been put in place. A busy postal officer tells us, “in the past two weeks, from 10:00 am to 7:00 p.m in the evening, we have sent thousands of rakhis by either speed post, postal mail or  registered post, its unending, but its a joyous occasions for us to.
