Women turn floriculturist for a better tomorrow

0

Chamba, Tehri; The women of Uttarakhand have been synonymous with every social, cultural, environmental change that the hill-state has seen.  So no surprises here when the women of Chopariyal and Churerdhar village have given up traditional farming and taken floriculture to the next level.

Once barren, the fields of Chopariyal and Churerdhar have come to life. Their crop of bright yellow and orange marigold sway in the breeze bringing smiles and a regular income to those who nurture them.

Once plagued with weeds, these fields are carpeted with vibrant marigold flowers in bloom. A feat accomplished under the Integrated Livelihood Project which the women of these villages took to. The Livelihood Project organized the village women in groups and urged them to cultivate flowers, which were easy to grow and also in high demand throughout the year.

The Project provided the ladies with flower seeds and training in collaboration with the Horticulture Department. In April this year, women prepared nurseries of the Pusa Basanti variety of Marigold and once the sapling were ready they were transplanted in fields at an interval of one week.

Project Director Dr. Heeraballabh Pant, tells us, “this has been possible only because of the hard work of these women. Floriculture is a good business and less taxing for women.

Come September, the first crop of flowers are in bloom and ready to be sold. The women recently sent a quintal of flowers to Rishikesh and split the money amongst themselves. They also received their first order of two quintals of Pusa Basanti which will bloom until mid November. Post which another crop of flowers will be cultivated thus sustaining a dozen families of both the villages.

The women reiterate the fact that cultivation of flowers takes less effort and the profit is good, with a ready market. A happy Shakuntala Devi, of village Churerdhar tells us, “I love flowers and am enjoying cultivating them. There is less labour and makes good money, I am happy with what am doing and will convince other women to join in as well.

Some fragrance always remains in the hands that distribute flowers, and this phrase comes true for the women of Chopariyal and Churerdhar.

PEN-ing India’s future: PEN India, Uttarakhand

0

A rusting wayside hoarding, announces the Sapera settlement in Bhaniyawala close to Doiwala. Ten generations of this tribe, more than 80 families have made this tiny shanty colony their home. For them, little has changed as far as basic amenities available around their habitat is concerned, except their children have now been introduced to the ‘world of letters.’

Thanks to efforts of PEN-India Foundation, an NGO run by two dynamic young men Anoop Rawat and Santosh Budakoti, under the wings of an elderly scientist Dr. Prakash Keshaviah who put their heads and hearts together and founded Pen India.

Today 27 young minds between the age group of 4-6 years come for four hours daily, to a one-room rented school, where two teachers guide them.

Like all success stories Pen India too had its share of struggle. Anoop Rawat tells us, “the most difficult part was convincing the Sapera’s (snake charmers) to send their children to school, it took us close to 8 months just doing that.”

A few weeks old, PEN stands for ‘Providing Education to the Needy,’ their aim is simple! To offer free of cost, quality education to under-privileged children.

Working on the idea of how children should not be limited to memorizing books but be taught creatively, Dr. Prakash Keshaviah said, “the children of the school will not be limited to mere bookish information but will be provided activity-based education to enhance creativity and problem-solving.

With best intentions in mind and the relentless hard-work of the core group along with  a steady team of young volunteers Shivika Jain, Sushil Nautiyal, Naresh Shrikoti, Sandeep Rawat, Aarti Pundir, Pankaj Budakoti, Manmohan Dobhal, Sandeep Kumain, Ritu Sharma and Deepalika, Pen India School is a success story in the making.

Any help to this noble deed, shall be much appreciated (Stationary; Mats; Games; uniform and monetary aid)

Export House owner accused of fraud, hacking and theft

0

A leading handicrafts export company in Dehradun has accused the owner of another company, Leela Global Exports of fraud, hacking and theft.

The FIR was lodged with the Cyber Crime Police Station by the Administrative Manager of the company on 27th of August. The FIR accuses Vijay Prabhat, founder of Leela Global Exports, founded in 2017 of fraudulently applying for a job at the complainant’s company with the purpose of extracting vital information about the company’s business and clients.

According to the details given in the FIR, the accused, Vijay Prabhat applied for a job with the complainant’s company and was hired on 12th December, 2017. Vijay was required to sing and submit a confidentiality form as per the company’s procedure which he kept postponing on different pretexts. Then, after about a month of working with the company, Vijay Prabhat stopped coming to work from 9th of January, 2018. Furthermore, he cut all ties with members of the company.

The Complainant further claims that during this time, the company lost two valuable and original products, a silver bracelet and a silver inlay paper cutter, which had been procured from a museum abroad. At that time, the company did not suspect the incident as a theft. The complainant then asserts that on the 16th of August, the company’s management was informed by their US-based client about another business from Dehradun, Leela Global Exports that was offering the same products to the company’s clients on its website www.leelaglobalexports.com.

On further investigation, it was found that the above said company, Leela Global Exports was founded by Vijay Prabhat. The Complainant further added that they have discovered other crimes that the accused committed while in the company’s employment. Vijay Prabhat allegedly hacked into the computer systems to retrieve important company information like data, product photos, emails, contacts etc. The FIR also accuses him of hacking into the website of the company, which is password-protected for users trying to access the website in India.

Based on these details, the complainant has concluded that Vijay Prabhat joined the company with deliberate intend to commit fraud, hacking and theft. On the basis of these facts a case has been registered with the Cyber Crime Police Station. Speaking to Team Newspost, Investigation Officer Pankaj Pokhriyal apprised that hard-disk and computer system of Leela Global Exports had been seized and further investigation was under way.

In UK, this police-station doubles up as a school

1

Just eight kilometers from the Uttarakhand Police Headquarters in Dehradun, Premnagar Police Station has been doubling up as a day-care for under-privileged children.

Under the guidance of SI Mukesh Tyagi and Aasraa NGO, a successful day-care school has been running in the forecourt of the police station for months. Teachers here introduce children from 4-12 year olds to the world of literacy in two shifts which begin at 9:30 a.m. and wrap up around 3:30.

SI Mukesh tells us, “few months ago this NGO approached us asking for help regarding a place to teach the children, I suggested them to put up a temporary shed and started this day-care within the safety of the police station. We initially started with ten students in the month of March but now have close to fifty students.

Seeing the initiative of the local police, many people volunteered to help. Now, these children not only get free education but their stationary, uniform, a pick up and drop facility and other expenses are taken care off by like-minded people who come from time to time to aid and assist in any which way possible.

This first-of-its-kind school opened within the premises of the police station, is also being seen as an initiative by the police to keep away children who belong to the Nanda-ki-chowki slum, along the Tons river, from anti-social activities.

Today, Mukesh Tyagi and his teams responsibility double up as they beautifully balance the world of crime and the written word giving these young minds an equal opportunity to a better and brighter future.

Uttarakhand’s ‘Hursil Apple’ to be a brand soon

0

The apple seed of Garhwal is the gift by a man called Fredrick E. Wilson  aka Pahadi Wilson who introduced apples to the Bhagirathi Valley. The Stokes of Kotgadh and Banons of Kullu were pioneers in the cultivation of apple orchards in the Himalaya.

Did Wilson foresee that two hundred years down the line, he would one day be remembered for bringing prosperity to the region thanks to apple produce, putting not just Hursil, but the entire district of Uttarakashi on the map of horticulture produce and tourism.

Today, eight varieties of apples including Wilson Apple, Royal Delicious, Red Delicious  grow in abundance in the region, seeking their own personalised brand as ‘Hursil Apple.’

Director of Indo-Dutch Horticulture Technologies Sudhir Chadha who has been surveying and assisting apple growers in the region tells us, “we did an extensive survey and study in Uttarakhand and came to the conclusion that the District of Uttarakashi alone can substitute for apple import. Aarakot hills, Sankri Natwar region including Hursil have ample potential, while low-lying areas of the district have been successful in experiments with new apple stock brought in from Netherlands, France and Italy.

Making the most of what the district has to offer, the District Magistrate of Uttarkashi Ashish Kumar tells us, “On the 28th of September,  a day event will be held in Hursil. It will be first-of-its-kind fair which will bring apple buyers and sellers on an interactive platform and also serve the dual purpose of connecting Hursil in Uttarkashi to other destinations on the tourism map as well.”

Visitor, locals and tourists alike shall be invitees to partake the Apple harvest from the orchards abutting Hursil. The local economy swivels around the apple crop. Perhaps the branding of this produce will help bring Wilson’s apples on par with apples that go by the name of Himanchal Apple.

High Court orders change in timing of Naini-Doon Janshatabdi

0

Nainital, The High Court ordered the Railways to change the time-table of the Naini-Doon Janshatabdi, the train which was recently flagged off and runs between Kathgodam in Kumaon and Dehradun. The Court passed orders that the train timing to depart from Kathgodam to Dehradun be changed to 5pm and from Dehradun to Kathgodam at 5 a.m. in the morning. Along with this the Court ordered the train to ply on Sunday as well.

Taking cognisance of a PIL filed by Advocate Pankaj Miglani who brought forth the issue also highlighted the fact that the condition of Dehradun and Kathgodam railway stations was pathetic, with filthy platforms and railway coaches, without proper arrangement for food and sleeping for passengers.

The Petitioner further stated that the train was the best means of commuting between Nainital High Court and Dehradun, yet it was in a pathetic condition. The new train was being seen as a convenient means of transport for those who came to the High Court for legal work, but as the timing of the train was not conducive many couldnt make the most of it.

Hearing the petition, the Bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Rajeev Sharma and Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari ordered the Railway to change the timing of the Naini-Doon Janshatabdi and also to ply on Sundays. It further ordered that platforms at both stations to be properly maintained, passengers onboard to be served good food, coaches to be cleaned daily. In this case, the Railways were also asked to make a reply.
